Abstract

The 2012 Tresviso expedition was undertaken with collaboration between a number of UK based caving clubs and the Spanish AD KAMI

This year we concentrated on the resurgence cave of Cueva del Nacimiento, a 12 km cave system with a height gain of over 400m. The catchment of this cave totals 37km2 and, if linked with known entrances high in the Eastern Massif, would have a potential 1500m deep underground traverse.

The main effort was to dive the main upstream sump of the system, a dive not attempted since 1986. This sump, a good 5 hours caving into the cave, is seen as a major route towards the high feeder systems of the Eastern Massif.

In addition, leads further into the same cave, around the area known as “Death Race 2000” were pushed in the hope they offer a potential dry route into the mountain
range.

Summary

The main objective of the 2012 expedition was to mount a dive on the main upstream sump in Cueva del Nacimiento and attempt to climb the avens located in the Death Race 2000 area. Both of these objectives and more were met with great success.

Far Upstream Sump
The upstream sump was extended for another 80m and followed to a depth of -46m. The technical challenge of diving at this location marks this as a major achievement and the continuing passage heading off into the mountain is a tantalising prospect for the future.

Death Race 2000
About 700m of new passage and over -150m depth was explored; a significant achievement given the remoteness and technical difficulty of exploring in this area. A number of leads remain in this area, including the undescended pitch. We also see the Death Race 2000 stream way heading in a quite unexpected direction, possibly indicating a change in the geology of the cave system.

Other
Around 615m of new passage was found in the nearest reaches of Nacimiento with at least a dozen new leads added proving that there is still new cave to be found even close to the entrance.
